► AEM oil resistance and acid resistance

Ethylene acrylate rubber (AEM) has good resistance to lubricating oils, but we often see some standards citing reference oils as test oils instead of using actual lubricating oils for testing. We found that the test data of reference oils cannot be used as a reference, let alone replace the test of actual oils. The test data of reference oils and actual lubricating oils are very different.

 

► Heat aging resistance

Based on the 50% reduction in elongation at break, AEM can be used continuously for 18 months at 120°C and for 6 weeks at 170°C. The heat aging resistance of AEM is much better than that of chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) and NBR.

 

► Liquid resistance

AEM has good resistance to ATF (automatic steering fluid), gear oil, ethylene glycol/water mixture, diesel and kerosene, but has poor resistance to fuel C, phosphate ester hydraulic oil, non-mineral brake fluid, ester, ketone and gasoline.

 

► Cold resistance

AEM has better cold resistance than ACM and can be used at -40℃. If appropriate plasticizers are added, it can remain soft at lower temperatures.

 

► Compression set resistance

AEM ternary rubber vulcanized with amine vulcanizer has excellent compression set resistance. Under the condition of 170℃×70h, the compression set is less than 20%, but the compression set resistance of binary rubber vulcanized with peroxide is slightly worse. Long-term compression set test shows that AEM has excellent compression set resistance and the compression set resistance of ternary rubber is comparable to that of HNBR.

 

► Excellent ozone resistance and weather resistance.
After 3 years of exposure, the appearance and physical properties are almost unchanged. AEM ternary rubber has excellent flex resistance, with a flex life of more than 250,000 times at 100℃, but the flex resistance of binary rubber is slightly worse. AEM with aluminum hydroxide added has good combustion safety performance, especially the extremely low smoke and corrosive gas release during combustion. AEM also has good dynamic performance, and its shock absorption performance at high temperature is close to that of IIR.

 

Due to its excellent performance, AEM is included in ASTM D 2000 "Grading System for Rubber Products for Automobiles" and designated as EE material. EE material refers to a material with a heat resistance level of 175℃ and a volume change rate of no more than 80% after being immersed in IRM 903# oil (originally 3# standard oil) at 150℃ for 70 hours. At the same time, AEM is included in the SAE J200 standard, indicating that AEM has been recognized in the field of automotive parts in the United States.
