► High and low temperature resistance
Silicone rubber polymer molecules are chain structures formed by alternating Si-0 (silicon-oxygen) bonds, and their main components are high molar mass linear polysiloxanes. Since Si-0-Si bonds are the basic bond type of its composition, silicon atoms are mainly connected to methyl groups, and a very small amount of unsaturated groups are introduced on the side chains. The intermolecular force is small, the molecule has a helical structure, and the methyl groups are arranged outward and can rotate freely. The Si-0-Si bonds that constitute the main chain of polysiloxane are different from the C-℃ bonds and C-0 bonds of general polymer compounds. Its bond energy is about 1.3 times that of the latter, and the bond angle and bond length are also larger. Due to its unique molecular structure, polysiloxane shows higher thermal stability, softness, electrical insulation and chemical stability, etc., which makes silicone rubber have better high thermal stability than other ordinary rubbers. In addition, compared with carbon atoms, silicon atoms have stronger metallic properties and weaker electronegativity, so that about 50% of Si-0-Si bonds exist in the form of ionic bonds.
► Heat resistance
Silicone rubber has much better heat resistance than ordinary rubber. It can be used almost permanently at 150℃ without performance changes; it can be used continuously for 10,000 hours at 200℃; it can also be used for a period of time at 350℃. When burning, it produces non-flammable silica and self-extinguishes, releasing carbon dioxide and water, and has very low toxicity. It is widely used in occasions requiring heat resistance: thermos seals, pressure cooker rings, heat-resistant handles.
► High temperature stability
The most notable feature of silicone rubber is its high temperature stability, which can be used for a long time in an environment with air at 180℃. If appropriate fillers and high-temperature additives are selected, its operating temperature can be as high as 375℃, and it can withstand instantaneous high temperatures of several thousand degrees Celsius. It is estimated that the service life of ordinary silicone rubber can reach 20 years at 120℃ and 5 years at 150℃.
