► Heat aging
The heat aging of silicone rubber is mainly carried out by oxidation of side chain methyl and rupture of main chain siloxane bonds. So on the one hand, the heat resistance of silicone rubber depends on its side chain. On the other hand, the main chain breakage (also known as seal heat resistance) is different from oxidation aging. It is related to the softness of the main chain and the presence of the end group. The presence of water, acid, alkali, etc. has a significant promoting effect on the chain breakage.
 

► Strength
The physical strength of silicone rubber at room temperature is worse than that of other organic rubbers, but its strength is optimal under high temperature conditions. For example, the compression permanent deformation of silicone rubber after 70 hours of pressurization at 150℃ is only 7%~10%. This low compression permanent deformation is a good material for seals and rollers such as O-rings, gaskets and washers used at high temperatures. In addition, special silicone rubber can also have radiation resistance.
 

► Cold resistance
Since the molecular structure of silicone rubber is helical and has particularly good flexibility, polysiloxane has a very low glass transition temperature and brittle temperature. It has a lower brittle point than natural rubber or other synthetic rubbers: the brittle point of ordinary rubber is -30~-20℃, and the brittle point of silicone rubber is the lowest among all rubbers, so it has inherent low-temperature elasticity. Generally speaking, the brittle point of general-purpose silicone rubber is between -60 and -50℃, the modified product can withstand -80℃, and the brittle point of specially formulated silicone rubber can reach -115℃. The cold resistance and low-temperature elasticity of silicone rubber are not improved by adding plasticizers, but by changing the molecular structure of polysiloxane.
